Obituary: the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire

09/25/2014

The death of Deborah Devonshire marks the end of an era – the last surviving (and most sensible) of the Mitford sisters, the virtual inventor of the stately home industry at Chatsworth and a really remarkable woman. From her obituary in the Telegraph two quotes worth quoting:

“After agricultural shows, Marks & Spencer is the place to go shopping, and then Paris. Nothing in between seems to be much good.”

On publishing The Chatsworth Cookery Book in 2003, “I haven’t cooked since the war.”
