Why are so few women running leading museums when museums have such a large female workforce?

There is only one woman at the top of a national museum funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport – Diane Lees at Imperial War Museums. There are other female national museum directors such as Penelope Curtis, running Tate Britain and Janice Murray at the National Army Museum. Interesting that women are leading museums dedicated to conflict and the military, which would be thought to be more ‘masculine’.
