Holocaust Memorial Day

Yesterday was Holocaust Memorial Day, which has been held every year since 2001 on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Russian troops. This year marks 70 years since that event. I was privileged to meet a number of Holocaust survivors when I worked at the Imperial War Museum. where their story is told in the permanent Holocaust Exhibition.

Roman Halter was the survivor who had the most impact on me, I think mainly because of his sense of humour and his huge enthusiasm for life. He sadly died in 2012 but his obituary gives a glimpse of his extraordinary life:
