Fifty years since Churchill’s death and funeral


Another big anniversary this week. After the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz comes 50 years since the death of Winston Churchill on Saturday, followed by today, the anniversary of his state funeral. This really seems to have caught the media’s attention, with lavish coverage of the funeral itself and events to mark its anniversary today.

The Union Jack which covered his coffin can be seen in the Churchill Museum at the Churchill War Rooms where I once worked, while remarkable Pathe colour footage of the occasion, which is also shown in the Churchill Museum, can be viewed here:
