A new side to Queen Victoria… photography collector and Waterloo enthusiast


This photograph from the Royal Collection was taken in 1880 and acquired by Queen Victoria. The men depicted are the last survivors of the Battle of Waterloo, the 200th anniversary of which is being marked this year (a welcome break from First World War centenaries….)

They are are Naish Hanney (b.1792) (seated), John McKay (b.1785), Benjamin Bumstead (b.1798) (seated), Robert Norton (b.1790) and Sampson Webb (b.1798) (seated).
