The Spitalfields Nippers

09/16/2015

I came across an article about the Spitalfields Nippers on the New Statesman website while looking for something else entirely, and was intrigued not only by the photographs taken by Horace Warner, but also by the amount of information gathered about these individuals. All lived in the slums of (now gentrified) Spitalfields. The photos were gathered together in a book published last year.

For example Thomas Neale, shown in this photo, was later killed in the First World War, but we also learn that his mother died “from exhaustion” in 1897.

The article concludes with the fact that the Borough of Tower Hamlets, which covers the locations where the Nippers were photographed, now has the highest rate of child poverty in London.
