Brian Sewell

The (in)famous art critic of the Evening Standard died last month. His reviews were usually acerbic and forthright, and although I didn’t always agree with him, at least he was honest and informed. And two other positive things about him as a reviewer – as he wrote in the Standard, his reviews reached a far wider audience than many art critics do. In addition, as well as reviewing art exhibitions, he was good at broadening his view to include museums, which are often left out of the national papers.

Here is a review he wrote in April 2012 of Royal River, an exhibition about royalty and the Thames at the National Maritime Museum on which I worked in its initial stages.

I think he liked it !
